What can you do in GTA VI? 20 'can you' questions answered

Short answers to the questions people type most, each graded. Yes: switch between Jason and Lucia, go to the gym, change clothes and hair, rob almost any shop, enter far more buildings, choose a romance. Probably: fish (catch-and-release) and hunt. Unclear: pets, buying businesses. Not at launch, as far as anyone knows: online play, crossplay, a full first-person mode.

Most of what people want to know about GTA VI starts with "can you". Here are 20 of those questions, each answered from what Rockstar or the press it briefed has said, with the grade in words.

Verdict: Confirmed: you can switch between Jason and Lucia, train at a gym, change clothes and hair, rob almost any shop, enter far more buildings than before, and shape an optional romance. Inference, High confidence: fishing is catch-and-release and hunting earns money. Speculation, Low confidence: you can own a pet. Not at launch, as far as anyone knows: online play and crossplay.

Can you switch between Jason and Lucia in GTA VI?

Yes, but the story decides when. Some missions lock you to one of them, some switch you automatically, and some let you switch freely. Outside missions you can switch to either. Confirmed.

Can you fish in GTA VI?

Probably, and it's catch-and-release. By preview accounts, Jason and Lucia can't keep what they catch, and fishing comes with challenges and collectibles. Inference, High confidence.

Can you hunt in GTA VI?

Probably, as a way to make money, unlocked through a friend of Jason's. Inference, High confidence. Separately, Rockstar has confirmed you can track some animals, graded Rare, Discoverable and Legendary, without saying what tracking leads to.

Can you go to the gym in GTA VI?

Yes. A full workout is three exercises in a day, and training three days in a row raises health and strength. Jason's and Lucia's bodies also change with what they eat and how much they exercise. Confirmed.

Can you change clothes and hair in GTA VI?

Yes. Rockstar says there are thousands of outfits, earned in missions or bought in stores, and hair salons across the map; a safehouse haircut has fewer options. Confirmed.

Can you have a pet in GTA VI?

Unknown. The idea rests on GTA Online's player-owned pets and one trailer scene with a dog; what Rockstar has shown is petting other people's dogs. Speculation, Low confidence.

Can you buy houses or businesses in GTA VI?

Not houses, it seems. Safehouses come with the story and can't be bought, though garages can; that's an inference, Moderate confidence. Rockstar hasn't described owning or running businesses.

Can you rob stores and banks in GTA VI?

Yes. Almost any shop can be robbed, and bigger targets such as jewellery stores, banks and armoured vans show on the map with an estimated payout. Confirmed.

Can you go inside buildings in GTA VI?

Many more than before. Rockstar won't give a number, but says you can enter "a huge number" of them. Confirmed.

Can you play GTA VI in first person?

Not fully, at launch. Rob Nelson reportedly told a YouTuber there's no full first-person mode, though you can aim in first person with some weapons. Inference, High confidence.

Can you post on social media in GTA VI?

You can watch and follow, it seems, but not post. GTA VI has Snapmatic, its social app, and in-world livestreams you can open; that's confirmed. Previews say Jason and Lucia can't post their own photos, since a couple on the run doesn't want a digital trail; that's an inference, High confidence.

Can Jason and Lucia have a romance in GTA VI?

Yes, and it's optional. It grows with time spent together; if you neglect it, it fades, but they stay partners in crime. Confirmed.

Can you steal any car in GTA VI?

Any driven car, yes; some parked ones need tools first, such as a Slim Jim or a key cloner. Some cars have alarms or trackers that alert the police. Confirmed.

Can you go scuba diving or jet skiing in GTA VI?

Yes. Rockstar's Game Informer cover story lists scuba diving, jet skiing, kayaking, airboating, base jumping, billiards, mini golf, gyms, zoos and street and off-road racing. Confirmed.

Can you take enemies down without killing them in GTA VI?

Yes: shoot arms or legs, or the gun out of someone's hand, and the crosshair shows the difference. Whether a whole mission can be done that way hasn't been said. Confirmed.

Can you get arrested in GTA VI?

Yes. There's a "Busted" state, and being busted can cost the cash you're carrying. Inference, High confidence.

Can you play GTA VI online?

Not at launch, as far as Take-Two has said. Its CEO described GTA VI as launching as a single-player experience. Confirmed.

Can you play GTA VI with friends on another console?

No crossplay at launch, because there's no online mode at launch. Inference, High confidence.

Can you spend real money in GTA VI?

Probably not in the single-player game at launch. Rob Nelson said no, by the account of visitors to Rockstar North, though Rockstar's page carries the standard "In-Game Purchases" notice. Inference, High confidence.

Can your choices change the story in GTA VI?

Yes. Rockstar says decisions large and small add up, and that the player decides Jason's and Lucia's fate. Confirmed.

What can't you do in GTA VI yet, as far as anyone knows?

Play online, play across consoles and play fully in first person: none of those is announced for launch. Pets and businesses are the big unanswered questions.

What changes this: the game on 19 November, when every "probably" here becomes a yes or a no, and any Rockstar statement before then.
