What's on GTA VI's HUD? Health, Focus, stars and the new police icons

GTA VI's screen stays mostly empty until something matters. Health and Focus sit top-left as thin bars, ammo and six wanted stars top-right, the minimap bottom-left. Under the stars, red icons show what the police know about you, from your clothes to CCTV footage, and a hollow star means they don't know who you are. What each part of the HUD does, from the Extended Look and Rockstar's own explanations.

GTA V's screen always had something on it. GTA VI's is mostly empty, and what turns up is there for a reason.

Verdict: Confirmed, from the Extended Look and Rockstar's own explanations: thin health and Focus bars top-left, ammo and up to six wanted stars top-right, the minimap bottom-left, and red icons under the stars for what the police know about you, including CCTV footage. A hollow star means they're coming without a description. Inference, High confidence: the phone is an object in Jason's or Lucia's hand, not a box on screen. Not shown: whether you can hide the HUD.

Rockstar hasn't published a HUD guide. This page rests on what the Extended Look shows, read by several outlets that agree on it, and on what Rob Nelson explained to IGN. Pre-release footage can still change.

What does GTA VI's HUD look like?

Four corners, each with one job:

  • Top left: health, a pink bar with a heart, and Focus, a purple bar with an eye. A stamina bar joins them when you sprint or fight, and oxygen meters appear underwater.
  • Top right: your ammo next to the weapon you're holding, and the wanted stars.
  • Bottom left: the minimap, with your route drawn in pink.
  • Everywhere else: prompts and notifications that fade in when you need them and disappear again.

Drive around with no trouble nearby and the bars vanish, leaving only the map. GTA V's curved health and armour arc in the bottom-left corner is gone.

What is the Focus bar in GTA VI?

Your Dead Eye. Trigger Focus and time slows so you can line up shots; the purple bar drains while it's on, and faster with each bullet. Focus also highlights things in the world: police officers, which no longer show on the minimap, and things you can use. The combat briefing covers how it works in a fight.

What do the icons under GTA VI's wanted stars mean?

What the police know about you. The stars go up to six, and beneath them a row of red icons shows each piece of the description they're working from:

  • A person: they know what you look like.
  • A clothes hanger: they know what you're wearing.
  • A car: they know what you're driving.
  • Two people: they know they're after a couple.
  • A camera: they have you on CCTV.

Each icon is something you can take away: change your hair, change your whole outfit, ditch the car, split up. A star drawn as an empty outline, a hollow star, means police are responding to a crime but have no description of anyone. The wanted-system briefing explains how to work each one.

What else shows up on GTA VI's screen?

Mostly things that come and go:

  • Prompts float where the action is: a verb on a door, a bag, a person. When you deal with someone, your possible responses stack up on the right of the screen.
  • Texts arrive as cards in real time, even in the middle of a shootout.
  • Livestreams. In one Extended Look scene a streamer's feed takes over part of the screen, with a live viewer count, rolling chat and a prompt to open it. The social-media briefing has more.
  • The phone isn't a HUD element at all. IGN reports the camera moves in on the phone in Jason's or Lucia's hand, and the pause map uses satellite-style imagery.

Money shows up in two forms, bank and cash on hand, matching the game's split between money that's safe and money you can lose.

Can you turn off GTA VI's HUD?

Nobody knows yet. Some guides say the minimap can be switched to 3D, swapped for a compass or hidden, but none of that is in the footage, and Rockstar hasn't listed its options. Since most of the HUD already hides itself, the settings will matter less than they did in GTA V.

How final is GTA VI's HUD?

The layout has been shown in Rockstar's own footage and explained in its own interviews, so the structure is solid. Exact colours, icons and placements can still change before release, as they do in most games.

What changes this: Rockstar publishing its HUD and accessibility options, or the released game on 19 November 2026.

Open the claim record — 7 claims
  • Confirmed High confidence

GTA VI's HUD puts thin health and Focus bars in the top-left, with stamina and oxygen bars appearing when needed, ammo and the wanted stars in the top-right, and the minimap in the bottom-left; most elements appear only when they're relevant.

  • Confirmed High confidence

Focus in GTA VI is a meter-limited ability that slows time to help you aim, draining faster with each shot, and highlights things in the world, including police officers and objects you can use.

  • Confirmed Very High confidence

GTA VI's wanted level goes up to six stars, one more than GTA V's five, as shown in the Extended Look's police chase.

  • Confirmed Very High confidence

In GTA VI, police build up what they know about the protagonists, shown as icons under the wanted stars: what they look like, what they're wearing, what they're driving, and whether they're together. Rockstar says police remember this for longer than in earlier games, and that changing clothes, switching vehicles or splitting up helps lose them.

  • Confirmed Very High confidence

In GTA VI a hollow wanted star means the police are responding to a crime with no description of who did it; a camera icon means they have CCTV footage; a hat or glasses isn't enough to lose a clothing description, which needs a full change of outfit from a clothing store or the spare clothes in a personal vehicle's trunk; and a mask can keep your face out of the description.

  • Confirmed High confidence

GTA VI has Snapmatic, its social-media app, and in-world livestreamers whose streams you can open, with a live viewer count and scrolling chat.

  • Inference High confidence

In GTA VI the phone is a physical object in Jason's or Lucia's hand, with the camera moving in on it, rather than a HUD overlay, and the pause map uses detailed satellite-style imagery.
