Do you need ID to play GTA VI? Age checks by country
Mostly no, but it depends where you live. In Australia, where GTA VI is rated R18+, Xbox and PlayStation now make adults verify their age before buying or downloading R18+ games, and the online mode will need a check when it arrives. In the UK, unverified accounts lose chat features, not games. The claim that Australians must show ID to start the game overstates the rules.
Age checks have spread from websites to game stores this year, and GTA VI is the biggest adult-rated game they'll meet.
Verdict: Confirmed: Australia requires age checks for R18+ online games and for app stores, and the Xbox and PlayStation stores there now verify adults before they buy or download R18+ games, which GTA VI is. Confirmed: in the UK, unverified accounts lose chat and social features, not games. Inference, High confidence: GTA VI's online mode will need an age check in Australia. Rumor, Very Low confidence: Australians face an ID check when they start the game.
Do you need ID to play GTA VI?
To play it, no. The checks that exist come from the stores and from national law, and they gate buying, downloading, chat and online play rather than the single-player game GTA VI launches as. GTA VI is rated Mature 17+ by the ESRB, PEGI 18 in Europe and R18+ in Australia, and the rating is what decides where checks apply.
Do you need ID to buy GTA VI in Australia?
Yes, or another proof of age. Microsoft and Sony now ask Australian adult accounts to verify their age before they can buy or download any game rated R18+. Microsoft offers an email check, a face scan, a document scan or a credit card; Sony offers a face scan or ID. Games you already own keep working, and an unverified account can keep playing them.
Both stores are following Australia's Age-Restricted Material Codes, in force since 9 March 2026. They require an age check for R18+ online games, none for other games, and required app stores to gate R18+ downloads by 9 September 2026.
Will Australians need ID to start GTA VI?
That's the overstated version. A widely shared article said Australians should "prepare for an age verification check when booting up" GTA VI. The regulator says single-player games don't have to check, and GTA VI launches single-player. The check you'll meet is in the store.
Will GTA VI Online need age verification?
In Australia, yes, when it launches. The codes cover every R18+ online game. GTA VI's online mode hasn't been announced or dated; the best signal points to 2027.
What about the UK?
Different rules, different target. Under the Online Safety Act, PlayStation made age verification mandatory from June 2026 for chat, messaging, parties and broadcasting, and Xbox asks UK accounts to verify to keep social features. An unverified player loses those features, and Sony says some in-game features may be affected depending on the game. None of the reports says the games themselves are blocked.
What changes this: Rockstar announcing an age check of its own, GTA VI's online mode launching in Australia, or new rules in another country.
