What GTA VI's Game Informer cover story revealed: a map twice GTA V's

Rockstar backed a 14-page Game Informer cover story on GTA VI, published on 29 September 2026. It puts a map size on the record for the first time (about twice GTA V's), names the first side activities, and sidesteps Disney World. What's new, what's recap, and what it didn't change.

Rockstar rarely explains its games before release, so fourteen pages of its developers explaining Leonida is news on its own. Two of the questions people ask most finally have answers from Rockstar itself.

Verdict: Confirmed, Very High confidence. The cover story is a Rockstar-backed press beat, and it puts two things on the official record for the first time: Leonida is Rockstar's largest map, roughly twice the size of GTA V's, and the game has named side activities, from base jumping to mini golf. Asked about Disney World and Cape Canaveral, Rockstar didn't say yes or no. The release date and platforms didn't change.

What is the Game Informer GTA VI cover story?

It's the lead feature in issue 382 of Game Informer, built on interviews with Rockstar's leads. The magazine announced it on 25 September 2026 and published it digitally on 29 September: fourteen pages, twelve new screenshots, and cover art of Jason and Lucia supplied by Rockstar. Print copies reach subscribers and newsstands over the following weeks.

Rockstar treated it as one of its own beats. Its X account said on 29 September that it had partnered with Game Informer to make the story free in the magazine's app. On the web, the full story sits behind Game Informer's subscription, alongside two free articles on weather and wildlife.

The outlets that read the full story quote, among others, Aaron Garbut, co-head of Rockstar North; Paul MacPherson, who leads environment art; Owen Shepherd, who leads lighting and rendering; and Michael Kane, who leads dynamic art. We couldn't read the paywalled text ourselves, so this page only uses details that at least two outlets with different owners report the same way.

How big is the GTA VI map?

About twice the size of GTA V's, and Rockstar has now said so itself. Aaron Garbut told Game Informer that Leonida is the studio's biggest world "by some degree", and that the bigger change is density: so many interiors that "you start to feel the buildings are more real inside and out", and as much attention on rooftops and alleys as on the main streets.

The same comparison first surfaced in August, when a YouTuber relayed it from a Rockstar North preview. That second-hand account turned out to be right, and the on-record version replaces it.

It's still a comparison, not a measurement. Rockstar has published no area in square kilometres and no official map.

What side activities does GTA VI have?

The cover story names them: base jumping, billiards, gyms, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street and off-road racing, zoos, airboats and jet skis. Until now, nothing Rockstar had published named a single thing to do in Leonida outside the story.

The list says these activities exist. It doesn't say how any of them work, whether they have progression or rewards, or which ones count as time together for Jason and Lucia's relationship.

Is Disney World in GTA VI?

Rockstar won't say. Game Informer asked directly about Orlando's theme parks, Disney World, NASA's space center and Cape Canaveral. Paul MacPherson said the team picks the landscapes and landmarks that serve the game, and "while we may not have those exact locations, everything we have is geared to getting that full Florida experience!"

Some headlines read that as a no. It isn't one. "Not those exact locations" fits a parody under another name as well as no counterpart at all.

What else did Rockstar say about Leonida?

The people. Michael Kane described crowds built to look like Florida's: characters who differ in height, build and musculature, with freckles, moles and tan lines, tattoo styles and hairstyles researched to match Leonida's communities, and what Kane called "the biggest range of garments and accessories we've ever made".

The weather and the wildlife, which the magazine put on its cover, have their own page: tropical storms and hurricanes, more than 170 animal species, and a list of what Rockstar is still keeping back.

Not everything in the fourteen pages is new. VGTimes, which read the whole feature, notes that part of it goes back over what Rockstar showed in August's Extended Look rather than adding to it. The police are the clearest case: six wanted stars, and officers who remember what you look like, what you're wearing and what you're driving, which the story calls Heat. Rockstar first described all of that in August, and the wanted-system page has the details.

Did the cover story change GTA VI's release date?

No. GTA VI is still due on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the cover story announced no new date, platform or edition.

What does the Game Informer cover story change?

Two questions that had no official answer now have one. The map's size moves from a relayed figure to Rockstar's own words, and side activities move from "seen in footage" to named. Both answers are partial, a comparison rather than an area and a list rather than a description, and that's the line the record holds.

What changes this: Rockstar publishing an official map or an area figure, or describing how the side activities work, through its own channels or another interview. The released game on 19 November 2026 settles all of it.

  • Confirmed Very High confidence

Game Informer's issue 382 carries a 14-page Grand Theft Auto VI cover story built on interviews with Rockstar's leads, with 12 new screenshots and Rockstar-supplied cover art; it went live digitally on 29 September 2026, and Rockstar partnered with Game Informer to make it free in the magazine's app.

  • Confirmed Very High confidence

Rockstar says Leonida is its largest map, roughly twice the size of GTA V's, and denser and more detailed, with more interiors.

  • Confirmed High confidence

Asked whether Orlando's theme parks and Cape Canaveral appear in Leonida, Rockstar's Paul MacPherson said that 'while we may not have those exact locations', everything in the game is geared to the full Florida experience; Rockstar neither confirmed nor ruled out counterparts.

  • Confirmed High confidence

Rockstar's Game Informer cover story names side activities in GTA VI including base jumping, billiards, gyms, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street and off-road racing, zoos, airboating and jet skiing.

  • Confirmed Very High confidence

Rockstar says GTA VI's non-player characters vary in height, body type, skin detail, tattoos, hair and clothing far more than in its previous games, with tattoo and grooming styles researched to match Leonida's communities.

  • Confirmed Very High confidence

Tropical storms and hurricanes occur in GTA VI's Leonida; Rockstar has not said how often they happen or how they affect gameplay or the story.

  • Confirmed Very High confidence

GTA VI has more than 170 animal species across land, air and sea, including over 60 bird types and more than 30 land mammals; named species include flamingos, manatees, pelicans and alligators, invasive species such as green iguanas, cane toads, feral cats, armadillos and rhesus macaques, and marine life including several shark species, whales, rays, turtles and jellyfish.

  • Confirmed Very High confidence

In GTA VI, police build up what they know about the protagonists, shown as icons under the wanted stars: what they look like, what they're wearing, what they're driving, and whether they're together. Rockstar says police remember this for longer than in earlier games, and that changing clothes, switching vehicles or splitting up helps lose them.
