How did GTA VI get here? Every moment from reveal to release

GTA VI's road to 19 November 2026, in order: Rockstar's first confirmation in February 2022, the hack that September, Trailer 1 a day early in December 2023, two delays in 2025, pre-orders in June 2026, the Extended Look, an autumn of partners and the Launch Trailer, then the dates still to come. Every entry rests on an official source or one of our briefings.

GTA VI comes out on 19 November 2026, more than four years after Rockstar first said it was making it. For most of that time Rockstar said almost nothing. This is what happened in between, in order.

Verdict: Confirmed, Very High confidence: Rockstar first confirmed the next Grand Theft Auto on 4 February 2022. A hack put early footage online that September, Trailer 1 came out a day early on 4 December 2023, and the game was delayed twice, on 2 May and 6 November 2025. Pre-orders opened on 25 June 2026, the Extended Look premiered on 27 August and the Launch Trailer came out on 15 October. Still to come, and only scheduled so far: pre-loading on 12 November, the Miami Heat's Vice City night on 18 November and the release on 19 November 2026. Every entry below rests on an official source or one of our own briefings.

When was GTA VI first confirmed?

On 4 February 2022. At the end of a GTA Online update, Rockstar wrote that "active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway". No name, setting, platforms or date came with it. The work had started years before, as Rockstar's leaders later told Bloomberg:

  • 2015. Rockstar's leaders first researched Miami, for a project code-named "Project Americas" that was meant to span parts of North and South America before it was cut down to Miami and its surroundings.
  • 26 October 2018. Red Dead Redemption 2 came out. Most of the studio then moved onto GTA VI, with Rob Nelson, Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut sharing its direction; by the end of 2019 they had the skeleton of the story, about Jason and Lucia.
  • March 2020. Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser, the lead writer on most of its games, left the company.
  • 4 February 2022. Rockstar's first public word that the next Grand Theft Auto was in development.

Our briefing on how GTA VI was made has Rockstar's own account of those years.

What happened with GTA VI in 2022?

A report, then a hack. Seven months after Rockstar's confirmation, footage of the game was online before it even had a name.

  • 27 July 2022. Bloomberg reported, from Rockstar staff, that the next Grand Theft Auto would have a playable Latina woman as one of a pair of leads, in a story influenced by Bonnie and Clyde, set in a fictional Miami. Rockstar's first trailer bore that out sixteen months later.
  • 17 and 18 September 2022. More than 90 videos of early development footage, taken in a hack of Rockstar, were posted on a fan forum. On 19 September Rockstar confirmed the "network intrusion", Take-Two reported it to US regulators, and both said work on the game would continue as planned. Fans started piecing together a map of Leonida from the clips, a project that still runs.

Who carried out the hack was settled in a UK court the next year; the leaks briefing covers the case.

When was GTA VI revealed?

On 4 December 2023, a day earlier than planned. Rockstar had set Trailer 1 for 9 a.m. ET on Tuesday 5 December. On the afternoon of the 4th, US time, a copy leaked on X, and Rockstar put the real trailer up on YouTube at 3:07 p.m. Pacific with a short post: "Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube." In Europe it was already just past midnight on the 5th, the day many records give.

  • 8 November 2023. In a note marking Rockstar's 25th anniversary, Sam Houser said the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto would come in early December.
  • 1 December 2023. Rockstar set the premiere for Tuesday 5 December at 9 a.m. ET.
  • 4 December 2023. After the leak, Trailer 1 went live about 15 hours early. It showed Lucia and Jason in the state of Leonida, home to Vice City, to Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road", and named a 2025 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Within 24 hours it had 90.4 million YouTube views, a Guinness world record for a game reveal.
  • December 2023. Arion Kurtaj, a member of the Lapsus$ hacking group whom a UK jury had found that year to have carried out the 2022 hack, was given an indefinite hospital order. He had been ruled unfit to stand trial, so the jury decided whether he did the acts, not whether he was guilty.

Our trailers briefing has what each trailer showed.

What happened with GTA VI in 2024?

Little in public: no trailer, no date. The news came from Take-Two and from inside the studio.

  • 2024. Rockstar began requiring staff to work in the office five days a week, citing security.
  • 16 May 2024. Take-Two narrowed the 2025 window to Fall 2025 in its annual results.

What happened with GTA VI in 2025?

Two delays, a second trailer, and the dismissals that became a court case. Our release-date history has every date and delay in detail.

  • 2 May 2025. Rockstar delayed GTA VI from Fall 2025 to 26 May 2026, saying it needed "this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve".
  • 6 May 2025. Four days later Trailer 2 came out, set to The Pointer Sisters' "Hot Together". Rockstar says it drew more than 475 million views across platforms in its first 24 hours, by its own count.
  • End of October 2025. Rockstar dismissed 34 staff, 31 of them in the UK. Take-Two says it was "for gross misconduct, and for no other reason"; the IWGB union says its members were dismissed for union activity and took Rockstar to an employment tribunal.
  • 6 November 2025. Rockstar moved the release to 19 November 2026, for "the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve". Take-Two called the delay and the dismissals "entirely separate".
  • 10 December 2025. At Prime Minister's Questions, Keir Starmer called the dismissals "a deeply concerning case".

What happened with GTA VI in the first half of 2026?

The dismissal case went before a tribunal, staff formed a union, and in June the game went up for pre-order.

  • 12 January 2026. The employment tribunal in Glasgow refused the dismissed staff's application for interim relief.
  • April 2026. Rockstar confirmed that "a limited amount of non-material company information" had been accessed in a third-party data breach claimed by the ShinyHunters group, with "no impact" on its players.
  • 28 May 2026. Rockstar staff launched the Rockstar Game Workers Union, part of the IWGB.
  • 18 June 2026. Rockstar revealed the cover art and said pre-orders would open on 25 June.
  • 24 June 2026. Rockstar and Take-Two set the price at $79.99, or $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition, and called GTA VI a single-player experience. The boxed version holds a download code, not a disc.
  • 25 June 2026. Pre-orders opened.

What happened with GTA VI in summer 2026?

The first long look at the game, a new leak, and an announcement almost every week.

  • July 2026. Rockstar North showed GTA VI to press and a few creators in Edinburgh, behind closed doors and under embargo.
  • 7 August 2026. Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, called the pre-orders "unprecedented", "astonishing" and "astronomical", without giving figures.
  • 18 August 2026. An anonymous leaker calling itself CyberLeek began posting clips from a playable build to promote a cryptocurrency token. On 20 August Take-Two asked a New York federal court to make Microsoft and Discord hand over records that could identify whoever was behind the leaks. On 26 August Rockstar called the leaked videos "heartbreaking for our team".
  • 27 August 2026. Rockstar premiered "Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look", about 26 minutes of the game, on Netflix at 3 p.m. ET, six hours before its own channels. It was Netflix's most-watched film worldwide that week.
  • 3 September 2026. Sony announced two GTA VI DualSense controllers. The same day a Miami-Dade commissioner and the county's sheriff asked the county not to use its resources to promote the game.
  • 10 September 2026. The tribunal's final hearing opened in Glasgow, and Miami Beach voted to let the city negotiate a deal for "VI" branding on beach chairs and umbrellas.
  • 15 September 2026. Eight major artists, from Travis Scott to Keith Richards, posted matching GTA VI-styled images on the same day.
  • 17 September 2026. Rockstar announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, 34 tracks made with Atlantic Records and out with the game. The same day Zelnick told shareholders that GTA VI launches as a single-player experience.
  • 17 to 21 September 2026. Sony's booth at Tokyo Game Show ran an Extended Look theatre with a 300-inch screen.
  • 22 September 2026. A "Welcome to Vice City" sign went up on the roof of Miami's Kaseya Center, under a deal of about $975,000 with Miami-Dade County.
  • 24 September 2026. Rockstar announced the Vice City Collection, a Collector's Box of merchandise that doesn't include the game, and Xbox's Matthew Ball said GTA VI was breaking Xbox's pre-order records.
  • 29 September 2026. Game Informer's 14-page cover story went live. In it Rockstar put a size on Leonida: roughly twice GTA V's map.

What has happened with GTA VI in October 2026?

The run of partners kept going, Rockstar showed its radio, and the last trailer came out.

  • 1 October. A GTA VI mural began going up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and the Kaseya Center's Vice City sign was switched on.
  • 2 October. The Miami Heat and Rockstar announced "A Night in Vice City" for 18 November. LOVE Magazine previewed a GTA VI issue with a new Rockstar cover, on sale from 5 October.
  • 7 October. Xbox's Matthew Ball said GTA VI won't stream only on Xbox Cloud Gaming and won't stream to PC.
  • 8 October. Rockstar revealed six of the game's radio stations and opened the Grand Theft Auto VI Collection of clothes and collectibles on the Rockstar Store.
  • 12 October. Goodyear's airship took off from Ohio in a GTA VI livery, "Vice City" along its sides.
  • 13 October. Wynwood Walls, Miami's street-art museum, unveiled ten murals of GTA VI artwork and free entry for Miami-Dade residents through 2028, with Rockstar. The tribunal extended its hearing and set closing submissions for 17 and 18 November.
  • 14 October. Bloomberg published its making-of feature: more than eight years of work, in Rockstar's own words, and why the two delays happened.
  • 15 October. Rockstar released the 90-second Launch Trailer without notice. It debuted a new single by Justice, "Flower in a Hurricane"; the duo composed the game's score.

As of 21 October there are no reviews, and Rockstar hasn't said when the review embargo lifts.

What's left before GTA VI comes out?

Four dates, all scheduled and none of them happened yet:

  • 12 November 2026. Digital pre-loading opens at local midnight, and boxed copies, which hold a download code, arrive the same day.
  • 17 and 18 November 2026. Closing submissions in the dismissed staff's tribunal case in Glasgow. No date has been given for a judgment.
  • 18 November 2026. The Miami Heat play the Milwaukee Bucks as "Vice City", tip-off 7 p.m. ET, on ESPN.
  • 19 November 2026. Release day on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The stores unlock the game at midnight local time, starting in New Zealand at 11:00 UTC on 18 November and ending in Mexico 19 hours later. The album, the Collector's Box and the two controllers come out the same day.

After launch, The Game Awards on 10 December are the first date on the calendar; GTA VI is eligible by its release date.

How was this timeline checked?

Each entry is dated by when it happened, not when it was reported, and rests on an official source (Rockstar, Take-Two, or the partner that announced it) or on one of our own graded briefings. We checked the list against the archive of RockstarINTEL, a fan news site that has covered GTA VI since March 2023, which helped us find and date events; no entry rests on that archive alone.

What comes after GTA VI's release?

Nothing official yet. The timeline ends, for now, on 19 November 2026; what's expected after it is graded, not announced:

  • Multiplayer in 2027 is an inference, from what Twitch's CEO told Bloomberg about Rockstar's plans; Rockstar and Take-Two haven't announced a multiplayer mode or its timing.
  • A PC version in early 2027 is a rumour.
  • More from Rockstar is Take-Two's own expectation: "we have a lot of work to do after the launch of GTA 6", Zelnick said in May.

What changes this: A new date, announcement or delay from Rockstar or Take-Two; the scheduled dates above happening, or not, as planned; or an event we've missed, which we'll add with its source.
