GTA VI gameplay: what Rockstar has shown and said

Official GTA VI footage shows open-world action in Leonida with two switchable leads, and Rockstar's interviews since the Extended Look describe much of what sits underneath: police who remember you, a reactive world, side activities, car theft and an 80-hour developer playthrough. Mission structure and combat depth are still undescribed.

For most of GTA VI's campaign, "what is the gameplay?" had one honest answer: whatever the footage showed. Since the Extended Look on 27 August 2026, Rockstar has also explained a lot of it in interviews, and the confirmed picture is much fuller than it was.

Verdict: Confirmed: open-world driving and on-foot action in Leonida with two playable, switchable leads; a six-star wanted system with police who remember you; a world where people and animals react to you; and a developer playthrough of about 80 hours. Rockstar has also described side activities, car theft and Jason and Lucia's relationship, which have their own briefings. Not confirmed: mission structure, combat depth, and skill or upgrade systems.

The badges on this page rate the strength of the confirmed record, not a blanket confidence rating on how the final gameplay systems will work.

What gameplay has Rockstar confirmed for GTA VI?

Rockstar's own footage, two trailers and a roughly twenty-six-minute Extended Look, plainly shows:

  • open-world action set in the state of Leonida
  • driving sequences behind the wheel
  • on-foot movement through streets and open country
  • two playable leads, Jason and Lucia, at the centre of the footage
  • both leads under player control, with switching between them shown as a mechanic; Rockstar says you can switch freely outside missions, while some missions decide who you play
  • a wanted level that goes up to six stars, with icons for what the police know

What Rockstar's developers have described since then goes further, and each part has its own page: how the police find and remember you, how Jason and Lucia's relationship and bodies change, what side activities exist, how stealing cars works, how robberies and money work, and the new limits on carrying guns and running out of fuel.

How long is GTA VI?

Rockstar hasn't given a length, but it has given one data point. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told The New York Times that his own playthrough, in February 2026, took about 80 hours, including "optional goals with narrative ramifications".

Treat that as one developer's run, not a main-story length. It includes side content, and a developer knows where everything is. It does suggest the story has optional parts that feed back into it.

How do people in Leonida react to you in GTA VI?

More than in any earlier Rockstar game, by Rockstar's account. "We pushed interaction with NPCs as far as we could for Red Dead Redemption 2," Nelson told IGN, and GTA VI is "taking it much further." In the Extended Look you hold a trigger to bring up options: Jason can pet, praise or scold a dog, and you choose responses when dealing with people. Linger too close and people notice you; some get aggressive, others want to get away. The New York Times reported more than 600,000 animations in the game, against about 55,000 in GTA V.

IGN, which watched Nelson play, names the options. With your gun put away you can greet or taunt someone; if they turn aggressive, you get the choice to calm things down or provoke them. People also notice if you eavesdrop on their conversation or follow them for too long, and some will confront you. One outlet's account of the options, so it's graded an inference at High confidence.

Your behaviour is tracked too. A criminal profile shifts if you keep going further than a situation needs, which the wanted-system briefing covers along with the police.

Does GTA VI use generative AI?

No, according to Take-Two's chief executive. Strauss Zelnick told GamesIndustry.biz that generative AI has "zero part" in what Rockstar is building for GTA VI. "Their worlds are handcrafted. That's what differentiates them," he said: built "building by building, street by street, neighbourhood by neighbourhood." Asked by the Kinda Funny podcast during a studio visit, Rob Nelson reportedly gave the same answer for the launch game: "No AI."

That covers the game's content. Take-Two does use AI tools elsewhere in its business, and Zelnick's answer doesn't describe testing or other internal tools.

What does the footage hint at without confirming?

Watching characters move through a crowd, take cover or drive together can suggest tone and presentation priorities: how frantic a scene feels, how dense a street looks, how the camera favours action over exposition. That's a fair read of atmosphere, animation and craft.

It isn't the same as a confirmed system. A moment of footage can suggest a mechanic exists in some form without confirming how it works or whether it's final. The interview wave is what moved several systems onto the record: Rockstar described them, rather than viewers inferring them.

What's still unconfirmed about GTA VI's gameplay?

None of the following has been described by Rockstar:

  • mission structure or story pacing
  • combat depth, beyond the limits on how many guns you can carry
  • skill or upgrade systems beyond health and fitness
  • running businesses (safehouses reportedly come with the story rather than being bought)
  • online or multiplayer features
  • platform parity or performance

Anything you've read that goes further than the confirmed record is inference or invention, often layered on unofficial material we don't republish.

How much of GTA VI's gameplay is actually known?

Much more than before the Extended Look, when the honest answer was a short list of things on screen. Now Rockstar has explained its police, its relationship system, its activities and its car theft in its own words. What's left undescribed is the shape of the missions and the fighting.

What changes this: Rockstar describing missions, combat or progression in its own channels or another interview. The released game on 19 November 2026 settles the rest.
