What did the GTA VI previews show? Every hands-off session, sourced

Nobody outside Rockstar has played GTA VI. In July, press and four creators watched Rob Nelson play it at Rockstar North, and since 27 August they've reported what they saw: story choices that add up, Lucia's ankle monitor at the heart of the plot, missions with more than one way through, safes you can blow or crack, and a relationship that can sour. Who saw what, how much weight each report carries, and where each detail is graded.

Almost everything new about GTA VI since August comes from people who watched someone else play it. That's worth knowing before you weigh any of it.

Verdict: Confirmed: in July 2026 Rockstar North held hands-off previews in Edinburgh, with Rob Nelson playing, for press and four creators, TGG, El Rubius, Davy Jones and MikeShowSha; coverage waited for the Extended Look on 27 August. Confirmed: the story has decisions that add up, and Lucia's ankle monitor is central to it. Inference, High confidence: missions have more ways through than before. Inference, Moderate confidence: stolen cash can be marked and need laundering.

Has anyone played GTA VI?

Not outside Rockstar. The previews were hands-off: Rob Nelson, Rockstar North's co-head, held the controller and played what visitors asked to see, while they watched with their phones put away. El Rubius didn't play himself, and neither did IGN, which describes watching Nelson play. MP1st first reported the format in August, from a source; the visitors confirmed it once the embargo lifted.

Who saw GTA VI before release?

Press and a handful of creators, at Rockstar North in Edinburgh, in July 2026. The outlets whose previews we use include IGN, Famitsu, The New York Times and the French magazine TROISCOULEURS. The creators were TGG from Australia, El Rubius from Spain, Davy Jones from Brazil and MikeShowSha from Italy. Everyone was under embargo until the Extended Look aired on 27 August, and the details have kept coming since, in videos, interviews and translations.

Does GTA VI have story choices?

Yes, and they add up. "Will Jason and Lucia work together? What kind of outcome will they reach? Those things are left in the player's hands. The player's decisions affect everything," Nelson told Famitsu. IGN reports big and small decisions, with small ones accumulating into bigger consequences and some big ones changing things at once, in a story designed to be replayed. MikeShowSha describes specific moments where Jason or Lucia has to make a real decision. How many endings there are, nobody has said.

What did the previews reveal about GTA VI's story?

Not much, by design, but one thing stands out: Lucia's ankle monitor. IGN reports it plays a prominent part in the story and in how she and Jason come together, and VICE heard the same from the previews. Both leads have pasts the story reveals in pieces. The relationship between them can sour and be repaired, with a status you can check; the protagonists briefing covers it.

How open are GTA VI's missions?

More open than before, by IGN's account. It saw a mission in a housing block with several ways out, a mission where you choose to drive or shoot from the car, and a police chase with a suggested escape route and other routes you were free to take. Nelson told Famitsu that some missions lock you to one character for the story's sake. One outlet's report on missions: Inference, High confidence.

What else did the previews show?

A lot, most of it now graded on the page it belongs to:

  • The police: hollow stars, CCTV, hot zones on the map, changing clothes to lose a description. See the wanted-system briefing.
  • Robberies: blow a safe and damage the loot, or find the combination and risk the police; fences who tip you off to impound lots. See the robberies briefing.
  • Combat: Focus, non-lethal shots, a kill cam, lighter aim assist. See the combat briefing.
  • The criminal profile: good deeds count too. See the criminal-profile briefing.
  • Hunting and fishing, the gym and food: see the weather-and-wildlife and realism briefings.
  • Interiors: El Rubius watched Nelson ride a hotel elevator to the roof with no loading screen. See the interiors briefing.

One detail has nowhere else to go yet. MikeShowSha says cash from a robbery he watched was marked and had to be laundered through a business before it could be spent. It's one creator's account, via a translation, and it hints at businesses Rockstar hasn't described: Inference, Moderate confidence.

How much should you trust the GTA VI previews?

More than rumours, less than Rockstar's own channels. These are first-hand accounts of the game running, often with Nelson explaining it as he played. But each visitor saw a curated slice, sometimes retold through a translation or a summary, and a hands-off demo can't show how a system feels over 80 hours. That's why the details on this site carry different grades: what several outlets saw the same way, or what Nelson said in his own words, is confirmed; what one creator reported is an inference.

What changes this: Rockstar describing these systems in its own channels, more preview material surfacing, or the released game on 19 November 2026.

  • Confirmed Very High confidence

Before the Extended Look, Rockstar North held hands-off GTA VI previews in Edinburgh, in July 2026, for press and a few creators, including TGG, El Rubius, Davy Jones and MikeShowSha, with Rob Nelson playing; coverage was embargoed until the Extended Look on 27 August.

  • Confirmed High confidence

GTA VI's story includes decisions, large and small, with smaller ones adding up to bigger consequences, and Rockstar says the player's choices decide Jason's and Lucia's fate.

  • Confirmed High confidence

Lucia's ankle monitor plays a key part in GTA VI's story, including in how she and Jason come together.

  • Confirmed High confidence

In GTA VI a safe can be blown open with explosives, which damages the loot inside, or opened with a combination found on site, which pays more but takes longer; police may wait outside a target; and a car fence can give you the code to a police impound lot.

  • Confirmed High confidence

Jason and Lucia's relationship in GTA VI can be damaged and repaired: a status shows it in the menu, ignoring the other's messages hurts it, and a weak relationship loses options like holding hands and kissing.

  • Inference High confidence

GTA VI's missions give more freedom than before, with multiple escape routes, a choice of driving or shooting in some missions, and a suggested escape route that you don't have to take.

  • Inference Moderate confidence

In a GTA VI session shown to YouTuber El Rubius, Rob Nelson entered a hotel through its lobby and took a working elevator to the rooftop without a visible loading screen.

  • Inference Moderate confidence

Cash stolen in some GTA VI robberies is marked and has to be laundered through a business before you can spend it.
