How realistic is GTA VI? Guns, fuel, food and sleep
GTA VI asks more of you than GTA V did. Jason and Lucia can each hide two handguns and carry two long guns that everyone can see, people react to a gun in your hand, cars need fuel or charging, and what they eat, how they train and how they sleep all show. What Rockstar has said about each rule, and what's still unknown, like how fast fuel runs out.
GTA V let you pull a rocket launcher out of your pocket in front of a crowd and nobody blinked. GTA VI doesn't, and that's only one of the new rules.
Verdict: Confirmed, from Rockstar's head of development: each character can carry two concealed handguns and at most two long guns, which are visible; people react to visible weapons; vehicles need fuel, and electric ones need charging; and Jason's and Lucia's bodies change with eating, training and sleep. Not stated: how fast fuel runs out, whether any of it can be switched off, and how strict the rules feel over 80 hours.
How many guns can you carry in GTA VI?
Two hidden handguns and up to two visible long guns per character. Rob Nelson, Rockstar North's head of development, explained it to the YouTuber TGG: "You can always have two concealed handguns on you whenever you want. You can carry two long guns and they will be visible on your back and in your hand. You can't put both on your back."
The rest of your arsenal stays with your vehicles: every car has a weapon crate, according to preview reports. The Ultimate Edition's garage and the pre-order bonus garage both include a weapon locker too.
Do people react to guns in GTA VI?
Yes, and that's the point of the limit. "In GTA 5, you can pull out a shotgun from nowhere in front of people and they don't react. That doesn't work here," Nelson said. A rifle slung on your back is tolerated; "if you've got one in your hand, people don't like it and they react and start moving away from you." In the Extended Look, passers-by edge away from an armed Lucia. It's part of a wider system in which people notice you, square up or back off.
Do cars need fuel in GTA VI?
Yes. Petrol vehicles fill up at gas stations, which can also repair them, in a short animation of about ten seconds, and electric vehicles need charging. Nelson showed it to TGG and was pleased with the pace: "Hey, that's pretty fast for a fill-up. You can't complain about that."
Rockstar hasn't said how quickly fuel runs out or whether you can turn the system off. TGG's expectation is that it only bites when you steal a car in a hurry without checking the gauge, which is exactly when you'd least want it to.
Do you have to eat and sleep in GTA VI?
Not in the survival-game sense, but both leave a mark. Eat a lot and Jason or Lucia put on weight; train at the gym and they build muscle, which fades if you stop. An in-game health app tracks whether they're well rested, and Nelson says that "will have some effect on regen of certain attributes." Long nights show on their faces. Rockstar hasn't said that you can starve or collapse.
Why is Rockstar making GTA VI more realistic?
Because the world got more detailed, by Rockstar's account. Nelson's reason for the gun rules was that the old approach "doesn't work any longer at this resolution with the behavioral sophistication we need from our population now." When people in the street react to you, an invisible arsenal looks wrong. The same idea runs through police who remember your clothes and car, and a world where "you're not the only person capable of violence."
What's still unknown about GTA VI's realism?
The settings and the stakes. Nobody outside Rockstar knows how fast fuel drains, how much the health app's effects matter, or whether any of it can be dialled down. Rockstar also seems unsure how players will take it: Nelson asked TGG whether he thought people would enjoy refuelling.
What changes this: Rockstar detailing these systems, or announcing options to switch them off. The released game on 19 November 2026 shows how strict they really are.

- Confirmed High confidence
In GTA VI, Jason and Lucia can each carry two concealed handguns at any time and at most two long guns, which are visible, one on the back and one in hand; other weapons are kept in vehicles, and people react to visible guns, especially one held in the hand.
- Confirmed High confidence
GTA VI's vehicles use fuel: petrol vehicles are refuelled at gas stations, which can also repair them, in a short animation of about 10 seconds, and electric vehicles are recharged.
- Confirmed High confidence
In GTA VI, Jason's and Lucia's bodies change with what they eat and how much they exercise, and an in-game health app tracks whether they are well rested, which affects how some attributes recover.
- Confirmed High confidence
GTA VI extends Red Dead Redemption 2's NPC interaction system: Jason and Lucia can interact with people and animals through prompted options, and NPCs react to them, noticing, getting aggressive or moving away; The New York Times reported over 600,000 animations in the game.
