How does shooting work in GTA VI? Aiming, Focus and non-lethal shots

GTA VI's gunfights ask more of you than GTA V's. Focus slows time for precise shots, you can shoot an arm, a leg or a gun to end a fight without killing, a kill cam replays the big moments, and by one creator's account auto-aim is off by default, with lighter assist and heavier recoil. What's confirmed about combat, what's reported, and what's still unknown.

GTA V's gunfights were mostly a matter of holding the aim button and letting the game find a target. GTA VI's, by every account so far, aren't.

Verdict: Confirmed: Focus slows time for precise shots; you can incapacitate or disarm instead of killing; a slow-motion kill cam shows the big moments. Inference, High confidence: auto-aim is off by default, with lighter, adjustable aim assist and heavier recoil, by YouTuber TGG's account. Not stated: how enemies are tuned, whether there's cover-based shooting, and how hard fights get at six stars.

Nobody outside Rockstar has played GTA VI. This page rests on the Extended Look and on what press and creators saw Rockstar's Rob Nelson play in July.

Does GTA VI have auto-aim?

Not the way GTA V did, by YouTuber TGG's account. "There's no auto aim anymore. It's more aim assist-y," he said after watching Nelson play. Beebom's report of his preview goes further: auto-aim is off by default, you can't hold the trigger to snap onto a target as in Red Dead Redemption 2, and how sticky the aim feels can be adjusted in the settings.

Reports disagree on whether hard lock-on is gone or just switched off by default, and adjustable settings point to the second. It's one creator's account, not Rockstar's own description: Inference, High confidence.

The same account says guns kick harder than in GTA V, so rifles reward short bursts over holding the trigger.

How does Focus work in a gunfight?

It slows time. In the Extended Look, Jason triggers Focus and drops two enemies while the world crawls. The purple Focus bar drains while it's active, and faster with each shot, so it's a resource to spend rather than a mode to leave on. Outside fights, Focus highlights police and things you can use. It's GTA VI's answer to Red Dead Redemption 2's Dead Eye.

Can you fight without killing in GTA VI?

Yes. IGN, which watched Nelson play, reports that you can shoot an arm or a leg to bring someone down without killing them, or shoot the gun out of their hand. The crosshair tells you which happened: a yellow mark for an incapacitation, a red one for a kill, by Sportskeeda's reading of the Extended Look.

Fights can also end before they start. In IGN's demo, Jason raised his gun at a group of attackers without firing and they ran. They still called the police, but nobody had been shot, so the wanted level stayed low.

Does GTA VI have a kill cam?

Yes. Especially violent moments play out in slow motion from a cinematic angle, as in Red Dead Redemption 2, by IGN's account, and TGG mentions "kill cams" too. Whether you can switch it off isn't stated.

How many guns can you carry in GTA VI?

Two hidden handguns and two visible long guns per character. The rest stay in your vehicles. People react when you have a gun in your hand, so carrying is part of combat too; the realism briefing has the rules.

Can you aim in first person in GTA VI?

With some weapons, reportedly, though there's no full first-person mode. The first-person briefing covers it.

What hasn't Rockstar said about GTA VI's combat?

A good deal:

  • whether there's a dedicated cover system, and how it works
  • how enemies are tuned, and whether there are difficulty settings
  • what six stars of police firepower looks like
  • the full list of aiming and accessibility options

Is GTA VI's combat harder than GTA V's?

Probably, on purpose. Lighter assist, heavier recoil and fewer guns on you all point that way, and Focus is the pressure valve. How it feels over 80 hours, nobody outside Rockstar can say yet.

What changes this: Rockstar describing combat or its aiming options in its own channels, or the released game on 19 November 2026.

Claim record

This briefing is built on 6 classified public-record claims tracked by Vice Atlas — each one graded on its own, and re-graded as official sources land.

Open the claim record — 6 claims
  • Confirmed High confidence

Focus in GTA VI is a meter-limited ability that slows time to help you aim, draining faster with each shot, and highlights things in the world, including police officers and objects you can use.

  • Confirmed High confidence

GTA VI lets you take enemies down without killing them, by shooting arms or legs to incapacitate them or shooting the gun out of their hand, and the crosshair marks an incapacitation differently from a kill.

  • Confirmed High confidence

GTA VI shows especially dramatic moments of violence in slow motion from a cinematic camera angle, like Red Dead Redemption 2's kill cam.

  • Confirmed High confidence

In GTA VI, Jason and Lucia can each carry two concealed handguns at any time and at most two long guns, which are visible, one on the back and one in hand; other weapons are kept in vehicles, and people react to visible guns, especially one held in the hand.

  • Inference High confidence

GTA VI doesn't use hard auto-aim by default: aiming is manual with lighter, adjustable aim assist, without Red Dead Redemption 2's lock-on, and guns have more recoil than in GTA V.

  • Inference High confidence

GTA VI will not have a full first-person mode at launch; a first-person view is available when aiming some weapons.
