Will GTA VI's map expand after launch? Liberty City and the other rumours, graded
Will GTA VI get new cities after launch, maybe even Liberty City? Bloomberg reported in 2022 that Rockstar planned to keep adding missions and cities, and in September 2026 files from a cancelled, much bigger Liberty City for GTA V surfaced in a leaked archive. Neither is a Rockstar plan for GTA VI. Each rumour graded, without linking any leaked material.
Rockstar has just told everyone Leonida is twice the size of GTA V's map. The next question was always going to be whether it stops there.
Verdict: Rumor, Moderate confidence, that Rockstar plans to add missions and cities after launch: a good reporter said so, but in 2022. Speculation, Low, that Liberty City comes to GTA VI: the files that surfaced in September 2026 belong to a cancelled GTA V expansion. Confirmed: that archive circulated. Rockstar has announced no expansion, DLC or new location for GTA VI.
The badges on this page rate its claims, and the strongest is that the leaked archive circulated, which outlets confirmed. They don't rate the rumours themselves: those are graded in the verdict.
Will GTA VI's map expand after launch?
Possibly, but Rockstar hasn't said so. The idea comes from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, who reported in July 2022 that Rockstar planned to keep adding missions and cities to GTA VI through updates. Schreier has a strong record on Rockstar, so the report deserves weight.
It's also four years old. Since then the game has been delayed twice, and Rockstar and Take-Two now describe the launch as single-player, with today's GTA Online carrying on alongside it. Plans described in 2022 may have changed, been delayed or folded into a future online mode. We grade it a rumor at Moderate confidence.
Is Liberty City coming to GTA VI?
Nothing says so. On 18 September 2026 an archive of roughly 192GB from Rockstar's 2022 breach began circulating, reported to include files from a cancelled GTA V expansion with a much larger Liberty City than GTA IV's. Fans immediately asked whether Rockstar might reuse it in GTA VI.
That's speculation, not a report. The files belong to GTA V, the expansion was cut, and no source claims to know Rockstar plans Liberty City for GTA VI. Rockstar hasn't released a full story expansion for any game since 2010's Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare. We don't link, reproduce or describe the leaked files beyond what outlets reported.
Did the leaked archive show GTA VI's map?
Old pieces of it, reportedly: low-detail map assets said to date from 2020 to 2022. That's years before the finished game and much rougher than the image from the August 2026 leak, which has its own briefing. Neither is how Rockstar intends anyone to see the map.
What has Rockstar said about GTA VI's map size?
Only that it's big: about twice the size of GTA V's, denser, and with more interiors, in Aaron Garbut's words to Game Informer. That is the launch map. Rockstar has said nothing about adding to it, and its pre-order announcement describes GTA VI as "a single player experience" coming on 19 November.
Will GTA VI get DLC?
Rockstar hasn't announced any, story or online. Its recent history points to online updates rather than story expansions, and Take-Two has said it will keep supporting GTA Online after GTA VI launches. New cities, if they come, are as likely to arrive through a future online mode as through single-player content. Until Rockstar says which, it's an open question.
What changes this: Rockstar announcing post-launch content, an online mode with its own map, or new locations. Anything less is a rumour about plans.
