Briefing Online Published New
Can you play GTA VI offline?
Probably yes, once it's installed: GTA VI is a single-player game, the PlayStation Store lists it as 'Offline play enabled' and the Xbox Store tags it 'Single player'. Rockstar hasn't said so itself. You do have to be online to get it, because every copy is a download, and on PlayStation a digital purchase needs Sony's one-time online license check. The story needs no PlayStation Plus, Game Pass or GTA+. A TikTok saying Rockstar confirmed 24/7 internet has no source and is graded a rumour; always-online DRM is unconfirmed either way.
GTA VI is a single-player game, and the PlayStation Store says offline play is enabled. But you can't get to offline without going online first, and Rockstar hasn't yet said what the game does once it's installed.
Verdict: Inference, High confidence: you will be able to play GTA VI's story offline once the game is installed, with no PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass or GTA+ subscription. Confirmed: both console stores list it as a single-player game, the PlayStation Store with "Offline play enabled", and every copy is a download, so you need a connection to get it. Confirmed, for PlayStation digital games in general: Sony requires one online license check after purchase. Rumor, Very Low confidence: that Rockstar confirmed a 24/7 internet requirement. Not announced: any connection requirement from Rockstar itself, in either direction, and any online mode.
Check: Store pages and support pages read on 22 October 2026. Store listings are live data and can change without notice. What the stores' labels mean is Sony's and Microsoft's wording; Rockstar has published nothing of its own on connection requirements.
Can you play GTA VI offline?
Very likely, for the story, once the game is installed, but nobody has promised it in so many words. The PlayStation Store lists GTA VI with "Offline play enabled", "1 player" and the line "Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience". The Xbox Store tags it "Single player" and lists no online multiplayer, no online co-op and no Game Pass tag. Rockstar and Take-Two both called it a single-player experience in their 24 June pre-order announcements.
The two labels are the stores' own words. Other single-player games carry the same "Offline play enabled" and "1 player" lines on the PlayStation Store, so read them as standard labels, not as a Rockstar promise. Rockstar's GTA VI page and its support article on platforms, editions and versions say nothing about internet or offline play at all.
| What | Needs a connection? | Where it stands |
|---|---|---|
| Downloading or pre-loading GTA VI | Yes | Confirmed: every copy is a download |
| Setting up a new Xbox | Yes | Confirmed by Microsoft, for every game |
| PlayStation's license check | Yes, once | Confirmed for digital games in general; inference for GTA VI |
| Playing the story afterwards | Not announced | Inference: no |
| A PS Plus, Game Pass or GTA+ subscription | No | Inference |
| Online multiplayer | Not announced | No online mode is announced |
Is GTA VI offline or online?
At launch, it's the single-player half, and that's all that's been announced. Take-Two's CEO repeated at the 17 September shareholder meeting that GTA VI launches as a single-player experience and that Take-Two will keep supporting the existing GTA Online. That describes day one. It doesn't rule out an online mode later, and the one outside signal points that way: Twitch's CEO said multiplayer would arrive in 2027, which is an inference, not an announcement. The mode's name, shape and price are all unannounced, and GTA VI's online side has its own briefing, along with the crossplay question.
So "offline play only" is true of what ships on 19 November, as announced. It isn't a promise about 2027.
Do you need to be online to install GTA VI?
Yes, at least once. Rockstar says the physical version contains a download code, not a disc: "A disc will not be included in the box". Every copy, boxed or digital, is a download. Digital pre-orders can pre-load from local midnight on 12 November, and boxed copies reach shops that day so their codes can pre-load too. How big the download is hasn't been announced; the size briefing explains why you'll know on 12 November.
On Xbox, Microsoft says you must be online to set up a console for the first time, and that after the console has updated and you've added your profile you can go offline. Plan to do all of that before launch night, not on it.
Does GTA VI need an online license check on PS5 or Xbox?
On PlayStation, a one-time one, for digital games in general. In April, players found a 30-day timer on digital PS4 and PS5 games bought after March 2026. Sony then told GameSpot and Game File that "a one-time online check is required" to confirm a purchased game's license, "after which no further check-ins" are needed. Sony hasn't said when the check can happen, which purchases are covered by name, or why the system exists.
A digital GTA VI is a purchased game, so the plain reading is that it needs the check. That's an inference: Sony hasn't named GTA VI, and nothing public says whether a pre-order starts the clock when you pay or when the game unlocks, or whether redeeming a boxed copy's code counts the same as a store purchase.
Xbox hasn't been described that way. The account that flagged the PlayStation timer said Xbox was affected "as well, allegedly"; we found no Microsoft statement of a recurring check, and Microsoft's own offline page says digital games that support single-player can be played offline on your home Xbox. That's the rule for every digital game on Xbox, not a statement about GTA VI.
Do you need PS Plus or Game Pass to play GTA VI?
Not for the story. Sony says most PS4 and PS5 games need PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer, and Microsoft says online multiplayer on Xbox consoles needs an Xbox Game Pass subscription, free-to-play games aside. Neither page ties a subscription to single-player play. With GTA VI listed as a single-player game, the story needs neither. No one has written that sentence, which is why it's an inference.
That's separate from whether GTA VI will be on Game Pass or PlayStation Plus, which has its own briefing.
Do you need GTA+ to play GTA VI?
No. GTA+ is Rockstar's membership for GTA Online players, and its page names no GTA VI benefit. The only GTA VI link is a free month of GTA+ that comes with a digital pre-order, a bonus for buying the game, not a way to play it. It renews at the normal monthly price unless you cancel.
Do you need to pay to play GTA VI online?
Nobody can say yet, because there's no online mode to price. Rockstar hasn't announced one, so it hasn't said whether it would be free, need a console subscription or sit behind GTA+. What exists is the platforms' rules in general: Sony says most games need PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer and some don't, and Microsoft exempts free-to-play games. Which side an eventual GTA VI online mode falls on is open.
Is GTA VI always online? The "24/7 internet" claim
No official source says so, and none says it isn't. On 14 April a TikTok channel called Vice Spotted posted a video titled "Rockstar Just Confirmed That GTA 6 Will Require 24/7 Internet Connection!", which drew about 23,000 likes. The caption cites no Rockstar post, interview or filing. Rockstar's pages state no such requirement and the PlayStation Store lists "Offline play enabled". We grade it Rumor, Very Low.
The grade isn't a promise about how the game will behave. A game can be played offline and still check a connection when it starts, and always-online DRM for GTA VI is unconfirmed in either direction. The only connection wording anywhere on the record is a general line Rockstar puts on its store listings: some features "may require internet connection", with no list of which.
Will digital GTA VI on PS5 need a monthly check?
No, going by Sony's statement. On 28 April GTA BOOM asked what the reported 30-day timer would mean for GTA VI and answered, hedged, that digital copies might need a monthly connection. Sony's one-time answer came the next day, and GTA BOOM's own note of 1 October says the monthly worry no longer applies. We grade it Rumor, Very Low. The one-time check is real; the monthly part isn't.
How do you set up your console to play offline?
Before launch, while you're online, and on the console you'll play on. On Xbox, make it your home Xbox: Microsoft says a home Xbox lets you play your digital games offline, you can have one at a time, and you can switch it up to five times in a year. On PS5, turn on Console Sharing and Offline Play, which Sony says is on by default for the first PS5 you signed in to and applies to one PS5 at a time. Both are rules for digital games in general, not statements about GTA VI.
What's still open about GTA VI offline play?
Whether the game checks for a connection when it starts; whether the PlayStation license check applies to a pre-order, a redeemed boxed code, or both, and when it falls; whether any feature beyond the story needs a connection, such as the "features" Rockstar's general line mentions; what Microsoft does on Xbox, if anything, beyond its published offline rules; and whether, when an online mode is announced, it needs a subscription.
What changes this: A Rockstar support article or Newswire post on connection requirements; Sony naming GTA VI or boxed codes in its license-check statement; Microsoft saying anything about a license check; the launch-day reports of players trying to start the game with no connection; or the announcement of an online mode and its terms. Each gets added here the day we see it, with the date we read it.
