Briefing Platform Published New
Do you need a PS5 Pro for GTA VI?
No. GTA VI is a PS5 game: the PlayStation Store lists it for PS5, and Rockstar names only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The store also tags it 'PS5 Pro Enhanced', which Sony defines as a game improved on the Pro compared with a standard PS5, but neither Sony nor Rockstar has said what the improvement is. Reports of a sharper image or 60fps on the Pro come from leaks, retailer copy and analysts' guesses, graded here. Rockstar's trailers were captured on 'a PlayStation 5', which the press reads as a standard one. The Pro costs $250 more than a disc-drive PS5 on Sony's list.
Plenty of people are asking whether GTA VI needs a PS5 Pro, and the answer is short. What the Pro would add is the part nobody has said, and that is where the rumours live.
Verdict: Confirmed, Very High confidence: you don't need a PS5 Pro to play GTA VI. The PlayStation Store lists it for PS5, and Rockstar names only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Inference, High confidence: the Pro version will be better in some way, because Sony's "PS5 Pro Enhanced" tag, which the game carries, means enhanced compared with a standard PS5. Not stated by Sony or Rockstar: what the improvement is. Speculation, Low confidence: it is a sharper image or better ray tracing. Rumor, Very Low confidence: 60fps on the Pro.
The badges rate the strongest fact on the page, that no first-party page says a Pro is needed. They are not a rating of the Pro's rumoured features, which are graded one by one below. Everything here is as of 28 October 2026.
Do you need a PS5 Pro to play GTA VI?
No. The PlayStation Store gives the game's platform as PS5, and Rockstar's own pages name only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Not one page we read says a PS5 Pro is required. On Sony's side, the Pro plays every PS5 game, and a game tagged "PS5 Pro Enhanced" is a PS5 game with extras on the Pro.
Rockstar has never addressed the Pro, so we can't quote it saying a standard PS5 is enough. What we can say is that nothing on the record points the other way.
What does "PS5 Pro Enhanced" mean for GTA VI?
That the game is improved on a PS5 Pro compared with a standard PS5 in at least one way, and nothing more specific. The tag was reported on the game's PlayStation Store page in June, and it was still there when we read it on 22 and again on 28 October, with the game listed in Sony's "PS5 Pro Enhanced Games" category.
Sony's own account of the label is short. Games are "patched with free software updates" to take advantage of the Pro's features, and the features "vary by game". Sony names ray tracing, AI upscaling and higher frame rates as the kinds of thing the Pro makes possible. It gives no list for any one game and publishes no rules for earning the tag. Neither Sony nor Rockstar has said which of those GTA VI gets, and Rockstar has published no technical specification at all. The technical briefing has the rest of that record.
Some outlets write that Rockstar confirmed Pro enhancements, or a 30fps target. Neither is a Rockstar statement: what is confirmed is a store tag.
Did Rockstar use a PS5 Pro for the trailers?
Rockstar hasn't said. It says Trailer 2, the Extended Look and the Launch Trailer were captured in-game on "a PlayStation 5", and never adds standard or Pro. Push Square, GameSpot and VICE each read that as a standard PS5, and Digital Foundry measured about 1440p at 30fps in the Extended Look and again in the Launch Trailer, which fits a standard console.
We grade that Inference, Moderate confidence. Those are readings of one sentence, and a Pro running in a standard mode could post the same numbers. If the press is right, every frame Rockstar has shown is what a standard PS5 does.
What could a PS5 Pro add to GTA VI?
Nobody official has said, so everything here is a lead, graded by where it comes from.
- A sharper image or better ray tracing: Speculation, Low confidence. TweakTown relayed a report of guidelines attributed to the YouTube leaker Moore's Law Is Dead, under which a Pro Enhanced game raises resolution, frame rate or ray-tracing quality, and which says Rockstar is reportedly using the Pro's GPU to push towards 4K. Retailer copy on Amazon Brazil and Kabum in June promised "higher resolution" and "more stable frame rates" on the Pro, with no number. Digital Foundry's William Judd argues the Pro's CPU barely improves on the standard PS5's, so a game with this much traffic and crowd density struggles to reach 60fps, and 30 or 40fps modes look likelier. None of it comes from Rockstar or Sony.
- 60fps on PS5 Pro: Rumor, Very Low confidence. Graded, with its three origins, in the 60fps briefing.
- 30fps on both consoles at launch: Inference, High confidence. Two independent lines, a reported Rockstar developer comment and Digital Foundry's measurement, also covered in the 60fps briefing.
The pattern is the usual one for a label with no description: a leak, a retailer's marketing copy and an analyst's reasoning point the same way, and they still add up to a guess.
Could a standard PS5 close the gap with QSSR?
Possibly, but nobody has said GTA VI uses it. On 1 October Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, QSSR, a lighter version of the Pro's AI upscaling that runs on a standard PS5. Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei get it first, and it is open to every PlayStation developer. Sony says its Pro upscaler "remains the gold standard", and its announcement doesn't mention GTA VI.
Digital Foundry found no sign of QSSR in the Launch Trailer footage, and has said it would mainly sharpen the image rather than raise the frame rate. So the standard PS5's image could improve, before or after launch, or not. It is one more reason the Pro's advantage is unknown.
How much more does a PS5 Pro cost than a PS5?
On Sony's list, $250 more than a disc-drive PS5 and $300 more than the Digital Edition in the US. Since 2 April 2026 Sony's recommended prices are $649.99 for the PS5, $599.99 for the Digital Edition and $899.99 for the Pro in the US; £569.99, £519.99 and £789.99 in the UK; €649.99, €599.99 and €899.99 in Europe; and ¥97,980, ¥89,980 and ¥137,980 in Japan. Sony's own US store matched them on 22 October: the Pro at $899, the disc console at $649 and the Digital Edition at $599. Retailers set their own prices, so check before you buy.
Is the PS5 Pro sold out because of GTA VI?
It was reported in August, and we haven't checked since. After the Extended Look aired on 27 August, TweakTown and Notebookcheck reported the Pro out of stock at several US retailers, with resellers asking up to about $1,300 against Sony's $899.99. They disagree on whether Sony's own store still had stock, and both give GTA VI demand as the believed reason, which is their reading, not a retailer's data. TweakTown suggests a post telling people to buy a Pro for 60fps may have added to the rush. That rumour is graded Very Low above.
Is there a GTA VI PS5 Pro bundle?
Not an official one. As of 23 October Sony had announced no GTA VI console bundle, and the bundle briefing found no later one on 28 October. The one pairing with a PS5 Pro that we know of is a UK retailer's: EE sells a PS5 Pro and GTA VI together at a discount, as two separate products. An insider said Sony itself would sell bundles with a standard PS5 and a PS5 Pro, which we grade Rumor, Low confidence. The PS5 bundle briefing has the full list, and the Sony briefing covers the marketing deal. Japan's PS5 Pro lottery was tied to GTA VI by the press, but Sony's notice never mentions the game.
What about Xbox Series X and Series S?
Xbox has no PS5 Pro equivalent here. The Xbox Store lists GTA VI for Xbox Series X|S as one product with the "Optimized for Xbox Series X|S" tag, and no first-party page gives separate Series X and Series S numbers. Microsoft's page for the tag promises better load times, visuals and frame rates in general, not GTA VI's.
Digital Foundry's expectation that the Series S runs around 720p, with ray-traced reflections cut, is Speculation, Low confidence. Neither console is required: both are listed. The PS4 and Xbox One briefing has the rest.
Should you wait before buying a PS5 Pro for GTA VI?
If your question is whether you can play GTA VI on the PS5 you own, yes. If it's whether the Pro is worth $250 to $300 more for this one game, nobody can say yet. The tag says the Pro version will be better in some way, the likeliest way is a sharper image, and the strongest evidence on frame rate points to 30fps on both consoles. Our record gives no reason yet to buy a console for a feature nobody has named.
What changes this: Rockstar or Sony naming what the Pro version gets (a resolution, a frame rate, ray tracing or a mode), or saying which console the footage was captured on; Rockstar using QSSR on the standard PS5; or analysis of the shipped game from 19 November 2026. Each would move a line above, and we'd log the change here.

Claim record
This briefing is built on 21 classified public-record claims tracked by Vice Atlas — each one graded on its own, and re-graded as official sources land.
Open the claim record — 21 claims
- Confirmed Very High confidence
Grand Theft Auto VI is listed for PlayStation 5, not specifically for PS5 Pro: the PlayStation Store gives its platform as PS5, Rockstar's GTA VI page and support article name only PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and none of them says a PS5 Pro is needed.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
Sony says a game carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced label when it has been patched to use the PS5 Pro's features; its pages name ray tracing, AI upscaling and higher frame rates as the kinds of enhancement and say they vary by game, and the PlayStation Store lists GTA VI among its PS5 Pro Enhanced games.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
The PlayStation Store lists Grand Theft Auto VI as PS5 Pro Enhanced.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
Rockstar says GTA VI's Trailer 2 (7 May 2025), its Extended Look and its Launch Trailer were captured in-game on a PlayStation 5; none of its statements says whether that was a standard PS5 or a PS5 Pro.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
On 1 October 2026 Sony announced QSSR, an AI upscaler for the standard PS5, first in Marvel's Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei and available to all PlayStation developers; the announcement does not mention GTA VI, and Rockstar hasn't said it will use it.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
Sony's recommended prices from 2 April 2026 are $649.99 for a PS5, $599.99 for a PS5 Digital Edition and $899.99 for a PS5 Pro in the US, £569.99, £519.99 and £789.99 in the UK, €649.99, €599.99 and €899.99 in Europe, and ¥97,980, ¥89,980 and ¥137,980 in Japan.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
On 22 October 2026 Sony's PlayStation Direct store in the US listed the PS5 Pro at $899, the Digital Edition at $599 and the disc console at $649, and its only console bundle was the Marvel's Wolverine Battle Yellow Limited Edition bundle with the Digital Edition at $649; it listed no console sold with Grand Theft Auto VI.
- Confirmed High confidence
In late August 2026, after the Extended Look, the PS5 Pro was reported sold out at several major US retailers, with resellers asking up to about $1,300 against Sony's $899.99 list price.
- Confirmed High confidence
As of 23 October 2026 Sony has not announced a GTA VI console bundle or a GTA VI special-edition console: the PlayStation Blog posts tagged Grand Theft Auto VI cover the two limited DualSense controllers, the 24 June marketing post and a list of 2026 games, and neither Sony's US and Japanese console pages nor Microsoft's Xbox console pages list one.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
EE, the UK mobile network and online retailer, sold console-and-game bundles for GTA VI from the first days of pre-orders: GamesRadar reported the two PS5 pairs on 25 June 2026, and EE's own release of 6 July 2026 lists three, a PS5 Pro with GTA VI at £808 and a PS5 Disc with GTA VI at £588 (each saving £49.99) and an Xbox Series X with GTA VI at £543 (saving £24.99), against £68 for the game alone.

Sony is selling the PS5 Pro in Japan through a Sony Store application, with a lottery if oversubscribed, open until 7 October 2026 to Japan-registered accounts with at least 60 hours of PS4 or PS5 play since 27 September 2024; Sony's notice does not mention GTA VI.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
The Xbox Store lists Grand Theft Auto VI for Xbox Series X|S as one product with the 'Optimized for Xbox Series X|S' tag; no first-party page gives separate Series X and Series S performance.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
Grand Theft Auto VI isn't coming to PS4 or Xbox One: the PlayStation Store lists it for PS5 and the Xbox Store for Xbox Series X|S only.
- Inference High confidence
Grand Theft Auto VI will look or run better on a PS5 Pro than on a standard PS5 in at least one way.
- Inference Moderate confidence
Rockstar has not officially detailed GTA VI's technical specifications, engine, or performance targets.

- Inference High confidence
Grand Theft Auto VI will run at 30 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch.
- Speculation Low confidence
GTA VI's PS5 Pro enhancement is mainly a sharper image, through higher resolution or better ray tracing, rather than a 60fps mode.
- Rumor Very Low confidence
Grand Theft Auto VI will run at 60 frames per second on PS5 Pro.
- Rumor Very Low confidence
Sony will sell PS5 and PS5 Pro console bundles that include GTA VI.
- Speculation Low confidence
The Xbox Series S version of Grand Theft Auto VI will run at a lower resolution than PS5 and Series X, possibly around 720p, with fewer ray-traced effects.
