How do robberies work in GTA VI? Stores, banks and the money you steal
In GTA VI you can rob almost any shop, and bigger scores, from jewellery stores to banks and armoured vans, show on the map with a likely payout. Safes need codes, clerks and customers fight back, and no two jobs go the same way. The money comes in three kinds, loot has to go to the right fence, and the story itself sometimes waits until you've earned enough. What Rockstar has shown, and what's still unknown.
GTA has always let you hold up a shop. GTA VI turns it into a system with tiers, safes, witnesses and a money trail, and Rockstar has shown it working.
Verdict: Confirmed, from Rockstar's own previews: you can rob almost any shop; bigger targets such as jewellery stores, payday lenders, banks, armoured vans and criminal compounds appear on the map with an estimated payout; safes need codes; and money comes in three kinds, with loot that has to be sold to the right fence. Some story missions wait until you've made enough. Inference, Moderate confidence: you can't buy safehouses, but you can buy garages.
The badges on this page rate the previews behind it: Rockstar's head of development playing the game in front of journalists and creators. They aren't a promise about every detail at launch.
Can you rob stores in GTA VI?
Yes, almost any of them. Small shops such as convenience stores and gas stations aren't marked as targets on the map, but you can attempt a robbery in nearly any store you walk into, alone or with your partner. Rob Nelson, Rockstar North's head of development, robbed two stores while showing the game to the French magazine TROISCOULEURS, and neither went the same way: the clerk's reaction, customers getting involved and the police response all differed. "You never know what you're going to find!" Nelson said.
What can you rob in GTA VI?
Previews describe a ladder of targets, from small to large:
- convenience stores, gas stations and payday lenders
- jewellery stores
- banks
- armoured vans driving around the map
- criminal compounds stocked with drugs, cash or guns
- full-scale heists
The bigger targets appear on the map with an estimated payout. You also find new ones through story characters, tips from people in the world, or by exploring. Rockstar hasn't said how many heists the story has or how they're structured.
How does a robbery play out in GTA VI?
Every store plays differently, because the pieces vary: entrances and back exits, security cameras, where the safe is, who works there and who's shopping. Safes need a code, which you find by searching or get from a fence. Clerks, guards and customers may fight back. "You're not the only person with guns, you're not the only person capable of violence," Nelson said. In TROISCOULEURS' preview, a gas station robbery turned out to have a drug operation in the back room.
Witnesses matter as well. A crime has to be seen or set off an alarm before it's reported, and police may set up a perimeter around a store you've just robbed in case you come back. In one demonstration reported by YouTuber TGG, a Rockstar developer knocked out a clerk, destroyed the camera footage and searched for the safe code, then had to leave empty-handed because someone had already called the police. The wanted-system briefing covers what the police know and how to shake them.
What happens to the money you steal in GTA VI?
It depends on what you stole, because GTA VI has three kinds of money:
- Money in the bank is safe, and you manage it in an in-game banking app.
- Cash on hand can be lost. "If I get wasted, and I don't deposit it, it's gone," Nelson said, on his way to find an ATM after a robbery.
- Loot goes into duffel bags and is worth nothing until a fence buys it.
Fences specialise in cars, drugs or jewellery, and you meet them through the story, so you can end up holding valuable goods before you have anyone to sell them to. How much loot you can carry also depends on your vehicle: a bike holds almost nothing, while cars, vans and trucks hold more bags.
Do you need money to finish GTA VI's story?
Sometimes, yes. Game Informer's cover story reports that some story missions only open once Jason and Lucia have made enough money. Rockstar presents those moments as a nudge to go out into the world and choose how to make it, which is where robberies come in. How often it happens, and how much you need, isn't stated.
Can you buy property in GTA VI with stolen money?
Probably not a house. According to TGG's account of his preview, safehouses come with the story, because Jason and Lucia are on the run, but you can buy garages to store more cars. That comes from one preview and no Rockstar quote yet, so it's graded an inference. Whether you can own or run a business is still unanswered; the money briefing tracks that question.
How much of GTA VI's robbery system is confirmed?
The shape of it: targets from corner shops to banks, safes and witnesses, three kinds of money and fences. All of it comes from Rockstar playing the game in previews, not from a list Rockstar published. What's missing is scale and structure: how many heists, what they pay, and how the bigger jobs are built.
What changes this: Rockstar describing heists or the robbery system in its own channels, or the released game on 19 November 2026.

- Confirmed High confidence
In GTA VI almost any shop can be robbed; bigger targets such as jewellery stores, payday lenders, banks, armoured vans and criminal compounds appear on the map with an estimated payout; safes need codes; and staff, guards, customers and the police response make each robbery play out differently.
- Confirmed High confidence
GTA VI splits money into three kinds: money in the bank, which is safe; cash on hand, which is lost if Jason or Lucia dies before depositing it at an ATM; and stolen loot carried in duffel bags, which has to be sold to a fence, with different fences for cars, drugs and jewellery that open up through the story.
- Confirmed High confidence
In GTA VI, access to some story missions depends on how much money Jason and Lucia have made.
- Inference Moderate confidence
In GTA VI safehouses come with the story and can't be bought, but garages can be bought to store more vehicles.
