What's Rockstar's next game after GTA VI? No GTA 7 is announced
Rockstar hasn't announced a next game, and nothing is called GTA 7. Its heads of development told Bloomberg their next release won't take another eight years, and Take-Two's CEO says new technology may shorten some development timelines, but neither named a game or a date. Take-Two expects 22 unnamed titles between April 2027 and March 2029. Rockstar is publishing Remedy's Max Payne 1 and 2 remake, in full production with no date. Red Dead Redemption 3, L.A. Noire 2 and Bully 2 are rumours with one source each.
Search for "GTA 7" and you will find release dates, maps and trailers. None of them comes from Rockstar, and no game with that name has been announced. What Rockstar and Take-Two have actually said about what comes after GTA VI is short, and it is mostly about speed, not about a game. Here it is, with the rumours graded.
Verdict: Confirmed, Very High confidence: Rockstar hasn't announced a next game, nothing is called GTA 7, and Take-Two's own list of announced games has one Rockstar title, GTA VI. Confirmed, as intentions only: Rockstar's heads of development told Bloomberg that their next release won't take another eight years, and Take-Two's CEO says new technology may shorten some development timelines. Neither named a game or a date. Confirmed: Rockstar is publishing Remedy's remake of Max Payne 1 and 2, in full production with no release date. Rumour, Very Low confidence: Red Dead Redemption 3, L.A. Noire 2 and Bully 2, each with a single source. Not known: what Rockstar's next game is, or when it comes.
Is there a GTA 7?
No. Rockstar hasn't announced a next game, and no game called GTA 7 exists. Take-Two's list of announced future titles, in its results of 7 August, has one Rockstar game on it: Grand Theft Auto VI, out on 19 November.
The nearest thing to a GTA 7 on record is a joke. At an investor conference in 2024 an interviewer began a question with "I know we're not even at GTA 6 yet, but thinking about…", and Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, finished it for them with "GTA 7?". Outlets read it as a quip, and it confirmed nothing.
Will Rockstar's next game take as long as GTA VI?
Rockstar's leaders say it won't. In Bloomberg's feature of 14 October, Phil Hooker, one of Rockstar's three heads of development, said "the engine, the tools and the team we've built during this project will allow us to do things more quickly". Aaron Garbut, another, said of the changes made for GTA VI that "now it's done, and we're not going to rip it apart". Our briefing "How was GTA VI made? What Rockstar North told Bloomberg" has the full account behind those words: the eight years, the two delays and the studio's growth.
Read the wording closely. Bloomberg says Rockstar's leaders see GTA VI as "a foundation upon which they can build new content at a faster pace", and that they "vow that their next release won't take another eight years". That is "next release" and "new content", not "next game", and neither Bloomberg nor the people it quotes name a game, a GTA 7 or a date. Some headlines turned it into "GTA VII could arrive much faster". Bloomberg's own comparison is Vice City, made in less than a year on top of GTA III. It is an intention, not a schedule.
Zelnick has spoken along the same lines, with more hedges. Asked, in an interview published on 28 May, whether speeding up development is a priority for Take-Two, he said it is "possible that recent developments in technology will allow us to compress some development timelines" without compromising quality, "and we will hope to do that". The question was about Take-Two's long development cycles in general, with GTA VI one of four examples, and he named no game. At a TD Cowen conference in late May he added that Take-Two is "not a cadence-driven company" and never set a gap between GTA releases: what decides it, he said, is the time it takes to make something "as good as it can possibly be". That one rests on a single outlet's report, so it is graded Inference.
What has Take-Two said about the games after GTA VI?
That there are a lot of them, and no names. On its results call of 21 May, Take-Two's president Karl Slatoff said the company expects to deliver 22 titles in its fiscal 2028 and 2029, April 2027 to March 2029: three new IPs, seven sequels and six remakes, remasters or platform extensions, plus sports and mobile games. He named none of them, so nothing in the call says whether any is a Rockstar game.
In the interview above, Zelnick also said "we have a lot of work to do after the launch of GTA 6", and that he expects no change in Rockstar's team. He didn't say what the work is.
Is Rockstar publishing a Max Payne remake?
Yes. Remedy announced on 6 April 2022 that it would remake Max Payne and Max Payne 2 as a single game for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, on its own Northlight engine. Rockstar pays for the development and publishes it. Remedy's half-year report of 11 August 2026 lists it as in full production, and a Remedy speaker said Rockstar is handling the publishing side, so Remedy can't comment on it.
No release date has been given. "After GTA VI" is the usual assumption, but nobody has said so: the remake has no date, and Take-Two's list of announced games doesn't include it.
Is Red Dead Redemption 3 coming next?
Not announced, and not ruled out. Two claims circulate, both weak. Dan Houser, Rockstar's co-founder, who left in 2020, said on the Lex Fridman Podcast that a third Red Dead Redemption "probably will happen", and added "I don't own the IP". That is his guess, graded Speculation, Low confidence: he doesn't speak for Rockstar and didn't say it would come next.
Separately, in September 2023 an X account known for film leaks said the game was "officially in the works". Insider Gaming, which reported it, called the claim uncorroborated, and three years on nothing has backed it. Rumour, Very Low confidence.
Is L.A. Noire 2 or Bully 2 next?
No Rockstar statement supports either, and each has a single origin. A GTA Forums member, reported by Esquire India on 29 September 2026, says L.A. Noire 2 comes next, ahead of Red Dead Redemption 3. In October 2022 Gaming.net reported an insider, Tez2, as saying Bully 2 would follow GTA 6, and advised caution itself. Both are Rumour, Very Low confidence.
Is there a GTA 7 map, trailer or release date?
No. Rockstar has shown nothing of a next game, so a "GTA 7" map, trailer, leak or date you find online isn't from Rockstar. We grade no rumour about a next game's setting, Liberty City included, because none we found has a traceable origin. The Liberty City rumours that do have one concern GTA VI's own map and a cancelled GTA V expansion, and are graded in the briefing on whether GTA VI's map will expand.
So what comes after GTA VI?
First GTA VI itself, on 19 November. After that the record is thin: no announced next game, a stated intention to work faster that comes with no schedule, 22 unnamed Take-Two titles in the two years from April 2027, a Max Payne remake with no date, and three rumours with one source each. Reports of a PC version of GTA VI and of an online mode have their own briefings; neither is a new game.
What changes this: Rockstar announcing its next game, or Take-Two naming a Rockstar title among its upcoming ones; Rockstar giving the Max Payne remake a date or a trailer (Remedy reports its next results on 3 November and may repeat its status); Rockstar or Take-Two saying more about how fast the next game will come; or any of the three rumours getting a second, independent origin. Each would be logged here.
