Will GTA VI get a disc version? The physical copy rumours, graded

For a lot of players, a game in a box means a disc in the box. GTA VI's doesn't have one, and the question since June has been whether it ever will.

Verdict: Confirmed: the boxed version contains a download code and no disc, in Rockstar's own words. Rumor, Very Low confidence: a disc version in December 2026. Inference, High confidence: Rockstar has no plans to print discs at all, by The Hollywood Reporter's account.

Does GTA VI come on a disc?

No. Rockstar's support page says the physical version holds a download code and "A disc will not be included in the box". The boxed Standard Edition reaches shops on 12 November so its code can pre-load, and there's no boxed Ultimate Edition.

Will GTA VI get a disc version in December?

Very unlikely. The December date comes from Graczdari, an insider described as handling physical game sales in Europe, via the Polish site PPE.pl on 25 June 2026: the code-in-a-box run would be a one-off, with discs for PS5 and Xbox Series X following in December. Graczdari had earlier said GTA VI wouldn't get a traditional physical release at launch, which proved partly right, and that gave the claim weight.

It didn't survive the week. On 27 June The Hollywood Reporter cited a source with knowledge of the plans: "at this point in time, there are no plans for Grand Theft Auto VI discs to be printed — not at launch, and not months after". Take-Two had also previously denied plans for a later physical release. We grade the December disc a rumor at Very Low confidence.

What did Rockstar Support say about a physical copy?

That customers "will be able to acquire a physical copy during the following months", in an email shared on social media after pre-orders opened. It never said "disc". According to The Hollywood Reporter's source, it referred to the boxed code version, which goes on sale on 12 November, and that reading matches Rockstar's own support page.

Why doesn't GTA VI have a disc?

Rockstar hasn't said. Outlets and analysts point to three likely reasons: copies shipped early to shops are a classic source of pre-release leaks, and GTA VI has had several; a code lets boxed buyers pre-load like digital ones; and it works on consoles without a disc drive, which, Circana's data shows, are a large share of recent sales. All three are reasonable. None is Rockstar's stated reason.

Will GTA VI ever come out on disc?

Not on any announced plan. "At this point in time" leaves the door open, and publishers do sometimes release disc editions years later. For launch, and on everything reported since, the answer is a code in a box.

What changes this: Rockstar or Take-Two announcing a disc edition. If December ends without one, the rumour is settled.
