Does GTA VI use generative AI? What Take-Two has said
Take-Two's CEO says no. On 3 February 2026 Strauss Zelnick told GamesIndustry.biz that generative AI has 'zero part' in what Rockstar is building for GTA VI, and that its worlds are handcrafted. That covers the game's making, not the AI tools Take-Two uses elsewhere, and it is not a Rockstar publication. Rockstar North's Rob Nelson reportedly answered 'No' on a studio visit; the footage's NPCs react through authored systems, and the viral AI 'leaks' were hoaxes.
Three different questions hide inside "does GTA VI use AI?": whether the game was made with generative AI, whether Take-Two uses AI tools at all, and whether its characters are "AI" in the gameplay sense. Only the first has a statement behind it.
Verdict: Confirmed, Very High confidence: Take-Two's chief executive, Strauss Zelnick, said on the record on 3 February 2026 that generative AI "has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building" with GTA VI. Take-Two does use AI tools elsewhere, by his own account. Reported, not confirmed: Rockstar North co-head Rob Nelson answering "No" when Kinda Funny asked whether AI is in the game, a second-hand account. Not settled: the finished game, and any tool Take-Two hasn't named. Zelnick said what Rockstar is building, not that no AI-assisted tool touched any step. We found no statement published by Rockstar itself.
Does GTA VI use generative AI?
No, according to the head of its publisher. Strauss Zelnick told GamesIndustry.biz on 3 February 2026: "Specifically with regards to GTA 6, Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building. Their worlds are handcrafted. That's what differentiates them. They're built from the ground up, building by building, street by street, neighborhood by neighborhood. They're not procedurally generated, they shouldn't be."
We read the interview itself, by the outlet's editorial director, Jon Hicks, not only the reports of it. It was given on the day of Take-Two's third-quarter results, in a week when its share price had fallen after Google showed an experimental "playable world" tool, Project Genie.
When did Zelnick say it, and has he said anything newer?
On 3 February 2026, and nothing newer is specific to GTA VI. A "May 2026" date circulates because The Next Web re-reported the same quote on 19 May; it is the February interview, not a second statement. Business Insider's article of the same day is about something else: on David Senra's podcast Zelnick said "AI so far is really great at asset creation, but hit creation isn't asset creation", an argument about whether AI can make a hit, and it does not discuss how GTA VI was built.
On Take-Two's earnings call of 7 August 2026 an analyst asked how its studios deploy AI tools. Zelnick said the work serves "innovation and efficiency" and that "those tools are not going to replace anyone". He didn't name GTA VI in that answer, so it neither repeats nor withdraws the February line.
What does the statement cover, and what doesn't it?
It covers how Rockstar is building GTA VI: its world and content, which he says are made by hand rather than generated. It doesn't tell you three things.
- It isn't a statement that no AI was used anywhere in development. Zelnick speaks of what Rockstar is "building"; he doesn't describe each tool, such as testing, translation or a coding assistant, and the page doesn't know that any of them was or wasn't used.
- It isn't about Take-Two's other games. The same interview says the company is using AI more widely, next.
- It isn't a promise about the future. It describes the game as it was made, before launch; it doesn't speak for post-launch updates or a later online mode.
Does Take-Two use AI for anything else?
Yes, by Zelnick's own account. In the same interview he said "we have hundreds of pilots and implementations across our company, including within our studios", that "we're already seeing instances where generative AI tools are driving costs and time efficiencies", and that Take-Two's products "have always been built with machine learning and artificial intelligence". He gave no list of tasks, studios or games, and added that the efficiencies are "still early".
Business Insider, relaying an earlier interview of its own, reports that employees are encouraged to use tools such as Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini. That is a general statement about the company, and it names no studio. Zelnick has also said tools "don't replace creativity" and that AI can help make assets but not a hit; in 2023 he said generative AI could make game characters "really interesting and fun", and declined to say whether GTA VI would use it. His 2026 statement is the later and more specific one.
What has Rockstar itself said about AI?
Little in its own name that we could find. Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, was asked "point blank" by Kinda Funny's Greg Miller whether there is AI in the game and replied "No", by the hosts' account of a preview visit on 27 August. Push Square, GosuGamers and tbreak all relay it, from the same origin. It is graded an Inference, not Confirmed: the exchange comes from the hosts, we couldn't review the broadcast, and the question was "is AI in the game?", which is narrower than "was generative AI used in making it". Rockstar's GTA VI page doesn't mention AI. The one place Rockstar's own terms address it is its terms of service, updated in February 2025, which bar anyone from using its games and content to develop, train or promote generative AI tools. That is a rule for others, not a statement about how Rockstar makes its games.
What Rockstar's people do describe is hand-making. Aaron Garbut told The New York Times that a dedicated team built the NPCs and "we art-directed each individual one of them", for more than 600,000 animations. Game Informer's cover story quotes him on "a hand-crafted quality to every bit" of the world. Neither passage mentions AI, so they describe the method, not a ban.
Does GTA VI have "AI" characters in the gameplay sense?
Its NPCs react to you, but Rockstar has described this as authored systems, not generative AI. Hold a trigger and you choose how to deal with someone, from greeting to taunting, and people notice you, square up or back away. Police remember your face, outfit and car, and whether the two leads are together. Those are the classic sense of game AI: rules that make characters behave. Nothing Rockstar has shown has NPCs holding open-ended conversations that a model improvises, and it hasn't said how any of this is implemented; the gameplay briefing and the police briefing cover what is confirmed.
Are AI-generated GTA VI leaks real?
Some AI-generated "leaks" are real, in the sense that they existed and fooled people; none is footage of the game. In November 2025 clips of Lucia walking a rainy Vice City passed 8 million views in a day. Their creator, who posted as zapactugta6, then admitted: "Everything you saw was entirely generated by AI." Push Square and NME both reported it, and neither reports a Rockstar statement. Push Square's advice holds: treat anything that doesn't come from Rockstar itself with doubt.
What about voice actors and AI?
No source we found says Rockstar uses AI for GTA VI's performances, or that it doesn't. What exists is context. The video game performers' union, SAG-AFTRA, struck in 2024 over AI protections; its notice for GTA 6 said "While not struck, this game is produced by a struck company", so performers could keep working on it. The strike ended on 9 July 2025 with an agreement that includes consent and disclosure rules for AI digital replicas, and Take-Two's production company, Take 2 Productions, is one of the companies in it. The union's release doesn't name GTA VI, and we found no source saying whether the agreement's AI terms apply to its performers. The confirmed cast has its own briefings.
The Rockstar dismissals and union case is a separate dispute, between a different union and the studio, and no source we found links it to AI.
Will GTA VI really be free of generative AI?
That's what Take-Two's CEO says about how Rockstar is building it, said once in detail and not contradicted since. Nothing Rockstar has shown or said conflicts with it. The finished game and its credits come on 19 November 2026. Players can't audit a studio's tools from outside, so a statement from Rockstar in its own name would settle more than another interview.
What changes this: Rockstar or Take-Two saying that generative AI was used for GTA VI's art, voices, writing or code; Rockstar stating in its own name that GTA VI contains no generative AI, which would also lift Nelson's second-hand "No"; the launch credits or a patch naming an AI tool or an AI-made asset; or a newer on-record Zelnick answer that narrows or repeats the February line.

Open the claim record — 13 claims
- Confirmed Very High confidence
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in a 3 February 2026 interview with GamesIndustry.biz that generative AI 'has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building' with GTA VI and that Rockstar's worlds are handcrafted, even though Take-Two uses AI tools elsewhere in its business.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick said on 3 February 2026 that Take-Two has 'hundreds of pilots and implementations' of AI across the company, 'including within our studios', that its products 'have always been built with machine learning and artificial intelligence', and that generative AI tools are 'already' driving cost and time efficiencies; he did not say which tasks or which games.
- Confirmed High confidence
On Take-Two's 7 August 2026 earnings call, Zelnick said the company's AI work falls under 'innovation and efficiency', that technology can enhance but not 'replace' its 13,000 colleagues' creativity, and that 'those tools are not going to replace anyone'; the answer did not name GTA VI.
- Confirmed High confidence
Zelnick has said in 2026 that AI tools may help make assets but cannot make a hit: in March he called the idea that new tools let someone 'push a button and generate a hit' 'a laughable notion', and in May, on David Senra's podcast, he said 'AI so far is really great at asset creation, but hit creation isn't asset creation'.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
Rockstar Games' terms of service, last updated 28 February 2025, prohibit using its services or content to develop, train, enhance, provide source material for, or promote any generative AI tool; the wording concerns what others may do with Rockstar's content, not how Rockstar makes its games.
- Confirmed High confidence
GTA VI extends Red Dead Redemption 2's NPC interaction system: Jason and Lucia can interact with people and animals through prompted options, and NPCs react to them, noticing, getting aggressive or moving away; The New York Times reported over 600,000 animations in the game.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
In GTA VI, police build up what they know about the protagonists, shown as icons under the wanted stars: what they look like, what they're wearing, what they're driving, and whether they're together. Rockstar says police remember this for longer than in earlier games, and that changing clothes, switching vehicles or splitting up helps lose them.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
In November 2025 AI-generated video 'leaks' of GTA VI, posted by an account called zapactugta6, showed Lucia in Vice City; one clip passed 8 million views in 24 hours, and the creator then admitted that everything was generated by AI and that it had no real leaked information.
- Confirmed Very High confidence
SAG-AFTRA members ratified the 2025 Interactive Media Agreement on 9 July 2025 with Take 2 Productions Inc. among the signing companies; the union says it includes consent and disclosure requirements for AI digital replicas of performers.
- Confirmed High confidence
During SAG-AFTRA's video game performers' strike, which began on 26 July 2024 over AI protections, the union's notice for GTA 6 said 'While not struck, this game is produced by a struck company' and that performers 'may work with the game and will not be disciplined for doing so'.
- Inference High confidence
Asked 'point blank' by Kinda Funny whether there is AI in GTA VI during a preview visit to Rockstar North, co-studio head Rob Nelson answered 'No'; this is Kinda Funny's account, not a Rockstar publication.
- Inference High confidence
Rockstar North co-head Aaron Garbut told The New York Times that a dedicated team built GTA VI's NPCs and 'we art-directed each individual one of them', and that the game has more than 600,000 animations; Game Informer's cover story quotes him on 'a hand-crafted quality to every bit' of the world. Neither statement mentions AI.
- Inference High confidence
In November 2023 Zelnick said generative AI could make NPCs in games 'really interesting and fun' because their interactions are 'currently scripted', and declined to say whether GTA VI would use it.
