Is the leaked GTA VI map real? The map rumours, graded

In August 2026 an anonymous group posted images presented as GTA VI's full map, and Take-Two went to court over the leak. Is the map genuine, does Leonida have five counties, and how big is it really? Graded, without reproducing or linking any leaked material.

A leaked map answers the question everyone has, which is exactly why it needs checking before anyone treats it as the answer.

Verdict: The leak is confirmed; its contents are not. That the map is genuine development material is a Rumor at Moderate confidence. That Leonida has the five counties it shows is a Rumor at Low confidence. On size, the better evidence isn't the leak at all: Rockstar's Rob Nelson reportedly told a creator the map is about twice the size of GTA V's (Inference, High confidence).

These badges rate the claims on this page. The strongest of them is that a leak happened, not that its contents are accurate.

What happened with the GTA VI map leak?

From mid-August 2026, an anonymous group posted unreleased GTA VI material online, including images presented as the full map of Leonida. Rockstar filed takedown notices, and on 20 August Take-Two asked a federal court in New York for a subpoena requiring Microsoft and Discord to hand over records that could identify the people behind it.

That's all we record about the leak itself. We don't link to the material, reproduce it, describe it in detail, or name the group that posted it.

Is the leaked GTA VI map real?

Probably genuine, possibly out of date. Two things point toward genuine:

  • Take-Two answered the leak with takedowns and a court filing, treating the material as its own.
  • People who have mapped Leonida from official trailers and screenshots for years say much of the image lines up with what they had pieced together.

And several things keep it a rumour:

  • Rockstar hasn't confirmed the image.
  • Some of its labels appear in no official material.
  • The takedowns cover the leak as a whole, not this image in particular.
  • Development maps change. A genuine map from an older build can still be wrong about the finished game.

However convincing it looks, a claim that rests on leaked material stays a rumour on Vice Atlas until Rockstar or the released game confirms it.

Does GTA VI have five counties?

That's what the leaked image is reported to show: Leonida split into five named counties. We don't repeat the names, because they come only from the leak.

Rockstar's own vocabulary is regions, not counties: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Mount Kalaga, Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia. If the image is genuine, the counties might be real. They might also be working labels that never ship.

How big is the GTA VI map?

About twice the size of GTA V's, by the best account available. After a preview at Rockstar North in August 2026, YouTuber TGG said head of development Rob Nelson told him the map is twice the size of GTA V's and three times Red Dead Redemption 2's. Nelson also reportedly said Vice City alone is twice the size of Los Santos.

That's a creator's paraphrase, and it compares rather than measures. It's still a better answer than any figure worked out from the leaked image, because it comes from Rockstar.

Should you trust the leaked GTA VI map?

As a rough picture of what Rockstar was building, probably. As a guide to the finished game, not yet. The released game settles it on 19 November 2026, and until then the leak stays a rumour.

What changes this: Rockstar publishing an official map or size figure, or the game's release on 19 November 2026. An official figure would move the size claim to Confirmed; the released game settles whether the leaked map and its counties were right.

Open the claim record — 4 claims
  • Confirmed High confidence

From mid-August 2026 an anonymous group posted unreleased Grand Theft Auto VI material online, including images presented as the full map; Take-Two responded with DMCA takedowns and, on 20 August 2026, a subpoena in the Southern District of New York seeking identifying records from Microsoft and Discord.

  • Inference High confidence

Grand Theft Auto VI's map is about twice the size of GTA V's and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's, according to figures YouTuber TGG says Rockstar North's Rob Nelson gave him.

  • Rumor Moderate confidence

The full Leonida map image posted in the August 2026 leak is genuine Grand Theft Auto VI development material.

  • Rumor Low confidence

Leonida in Grand Theft Auto VI is divided into five named counties, as labelled on the map image from the August 2026 leak.
