Can you have a pet in GTA VI? Dogs, and the pet-ownership question

Rockstar has shown that you can pet, praise or scold dogs in GTA VI, and its Rob Nelson reportedly described making a dog owner drop a poop bag so you can throw it. Owning a pet is another matter: GTA Online added player-owned pets in December 2025, but nothing Rockstar has shown or said puts pet ownership in GTA VI. What's shown, and what's hoped for.

Leonida has more than 170 animal species, and the one people ask about most is the dog.

Can you pet the dog in GTA VI?

Yes. The Extended Look shows the interaction prompts that come up when you meet a dog, and outlets describe petting, praising and scolding. It's part of a wider interaction system that Rockstar's Rob Nelson says takes Red Dead Redemption 2's "much further": you choose how to respond to people and animals, and they react.

What else can you do with dogs in GTA VI?

One thing nobody asked for. By YouTuber TGG's account, Nelson told him that if a dog owner bags their dog's mess, you can hit them so they drop it, then pick it up and throw it at people. It isn't in any footage. Inference, Moderate confidence.

Can you own a pet in GTA VI?

Nothing says so. The idea comes from two places. In December 2025, GTA Online's A Safehouse in the Hills update gave players their own pets for the first time, with kennels in its new mansions. And Kotaku reads one GTA VI trailer scene as Jason and Lucia either owning a dog or living with someone who does. Rockstar hasn't described adopting, feeding or keeping a pet, and nothing it has said about Jason's and Lucia's homes includes one. Speculation, Low confidence.

What other animals are in GTA VI?

Lots. Rockstar says more than 170 species live across Leonida's land, sea and air, from alligators and manatees to flamingos, and some can be tracked as Rare, Discoverable or Legendary. Which household pets appear besides dogs, Rockstar hasn't listed.

Will GTA VI have pets?

As animals you meet on the street, yes. As companions you keep, not on anything Rockstar has shown.

How realistic is GTA VI? Guns, fuel, food and sleep

GTA VI asks more of you than GTA V did. Jason and Lucia can each hide two handguns and carry two long guns that everyone can see, people react to a gun in your hand, cars need fuel or charging, and what they eat, how they train and how they sleep all show. What Rockstar has said about each rule, and what's still unknown, like how fast fuel runs out.

Does GTA VI have a first-person mode?

Not a full one at launch, by Rockstar's Rob Nelson's account to a creator at the August preview: GTA VI is built around a third-person camera, though you can aim in first person with some weapons.
